The Fram was was used in expeditions of the Arctic  and Antarctic regions by the Norwegian explorers Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Severdrup, Oscar Wisting and Roald Amundsen between 1893 and 1912. Here she is trapped by ice in March 1894 and had a hull specially designed to withstand the intense pressure of the polar ice.
